When we bought our home we had to compromise, who doesn’t? For us to get a craftsman bungalow with old world charm, fireplace, first-floor family-room, finished lower level, and two bedrooms on the main floor we had to give up a double car garage and an updated kitchen. The most common issue with an outdated kitchen is not enough cabinet space and a total lack of countertops. As we talked about options Kate said she could work with what we had, I said there was an easy fix. I wish I could take credit for the idea, but the truth is I saw Tommy build this on the PBS program “This Old House”. I remember thinking this was a good idea at the time I saw it built so I looked online and found the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN3cJgTlYT I bought two upper cabinets 30 inches wide, one precut 4 X 4-foot plywood, and 4 wheels that stand 3 inches tall. My goal is for the finished countertop height to come as close as possible to the height of the existing countertops, for that reason I did not purchase Tommie’s recommendation of 4-inch high wheels. Now I wish I had, the smaller wheels don’t move as easily with the weight of full cabinets. The other modification I made was to use a longer butcher block countertop. By overhanging it an extra 8 inches on one side I made space for two 6-inch by 18-inch wire baskets. We use those for potatoes and onions. The total cost of the project was $350.00. If I had purchased unfinished cabinets, it would have been cheaper by $100.00. Once this island was complete, I had leftover countertop. I feel it’s important to have a work surface next to the stove, so I cut the leftover to fit the space. Now Kate has decent work space and loves the addition in the kitchen.
