As I worked with Mike and Susan it became apparent they liked older style Craftsman Bungalows. These homes are distinctive in style and design and generally feature low pitched gabled and hipped roof lines, overhanging eaves with brackets for support, wood double hung windows and hand crafted woodwork throughout the home. All of this makes what most people refer to as “old world charm.”
If you are going to have the floors refinished there is another way. It is called “bunging”. I learned this technique while living on our boat for 8 years. It involves finding the squeak, drilling a small pilot hole, then a 3/8 inch hole and driving a screw through the subfloor and into the floor joist. This technique leaves the screw head attached, then using glue and a hammer to knock a wooden plug in the hole. Watch this Bob Vila video. I like this technique because if the floor gets sanded once more the screws can be removed, it would not be easy, but not impossible. Once the floor gets refinished you will see the areas that have been repaired but only because you know where they are. Now you can have the beauty of old world charm without hearing the sound of old world charm! Related Articles:
